Frederick William Duke of Gloucester

£95.00

Duke of Gloucester; Field Marshal known as ‘Silly Billy’. A.L.S., 2½ sides, July 1817, strongly interceding for James Pitfield, a young Private in his regiment (the 3rd Guards), “under sentence of Death in the Gaol of Newgate” for robbery. William Frederick is forwarding papers in the soldier’s favour “as he is extremely young & has had an excellent Character”. He asks “to recommend to the Prince Regent to allow his Punishment to be mitigated”
I researched this documnet to see if James Pitfield was hung at Newgate. So far I have found no record of the execution taking place.
